A Brief History
Whitby Abbey has a history spanning over 1,400 years:
Founded in 657 AD by St. Hilda as a monastery for both men and women.
The Synod of Whitby (664 AD) was held here, a significant event in determining the future of Christianity in England.
Destroyed by Vikings in 867 AD, it was later rebuilt in the 11th century.
The current ruins are from the 13th-century Benedictine abbey, which fell into decline after Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.
